Discussing issues with teaching mathematics

Back to learn

It is over 12 months since I set up this blog but then due to lack of access and time I have done absolutely nothing.  I am back and eager to learn – How can I use this blog with teaching students to engage them?

Now I am also curious about assessment.  In secondary schools in mathematics we require the students to undertake an end of topic test.  Some schools allow students to take in cheat sheets (with formula).  I would like to some feedback on what assessment is used at the end of a topic and if such cheat sheets are used.  I am particularly curious to know what happens in Primary schools.

So far, everyone is in agreement that using remainders when dividing is not a good concept.  Now we need to spread the word further.  How might we do this?

Remainders when dividing

I am curious.  Should we teach primary school students to use the remainder concept when dividing.  ie divide 26 by 5 and you have 1 left.  Should we teach students to write “r1″ or “1/5″?
